The Ki in Aikido

The definitiotn of Ki is quite vast and encompasses different areas.
This energy that comes from our hara is the product of the body and spirit coming together.
The hara (KIKAI TANDEN) is the place where this harmony sits.
In Aikido one can define the Ki by saying that an action, using one's whole body, mind and being, united in a single action, is a current or beam of energy, called Ki.
The relationship established between two practitioners should reach beyond the simple physical relationship of the body as an object, to the centre-to-centre relationship, otherwise known as hara-to-hara.
To harmonise with their partner the tori should accept and respond from their hara. They also establish a communication, an identification that allows for the integration of the line of Ki and therefore also the hara of the uke.
The tori's hara becomes the core and dynamic centre of the action.
This unification of energy by the hara should be as direct as possible with neither physical nor psychological obstacles or hindrances, that is to say, by not engaging our body in a purely mechanical way nor our mind analytically, for both of these have a tendency to be hermetic; only the hara, by its natural capacity to capture without force, is capable of harmonising and fusing the Ki energies.
Once the techniques are more or less aquired, we can move on to the next stage, which consists of bringing our spirit or mind into a state of openness, close to that of meditation.
Just like when beginning to learn meditation, our attention should be focused on an object, a sound, one's breath or any other element, thus enabling us to free ourselves and calm our mental agitation to bring about peace and fulfilment. In aïkido it is the same; we should not only focus our attention on the hand that is going to grab or hit us but on the place where uke's attack is coming from, that is to say, their centre or hara.
We are no longer sollicited by and dependant on the troubling, outside elements but rather we are calm and lucid and in this state of unity we can mentally and physically harmonise with an attack.
